Micro-Hydro Design Manual: A Guide to Small-Scale Water Power Schemes
Published in Paperback by Intermediate Technology (November, 1993)
Authors: Adam Harvey, Andy Brown, Priyantha Hettiarachi, and Allen Inversin
Average review score:

A most concise and integral reference on MH applications
This highly rated manual, covers just about every practical and tangible theoretical introduction to the full design and/up to implementation cycle of MH projects, all in about 370 pages. It is important that it was written and amply illustrated not only with detailed schematics, but also with actual pictures from original installations in developing countries, which makes a viable aid in comprehending the "actual picture". The chapters covered detail a syllabus in: Components and Design of an MH Scheme, Cost benefit estimations, Hydrology and site survey, Flow prediction, Civil works and operational parts (all aspects from Weirs to Penstocks), Commercial engineering, Turbines (including reverse pumps), Governing, Drive systems, a very thorough presentation of the -cumbersome- Electrical Power System aspects, along with Operational, Maintenance, Financial and Commissioning aspects. Should there be something more for an engineer to wish for, would be more info on turbines -something you would expect to find in a specialized book on the subject anyway. The book should provide a valuable asset not only to MH engineers, but to Renewable Energy Technology engineers as well, since it is progressively becoming apparent that a combination of RET along with Pumped Storage and MH, presents a highly attractive opportunity for both developed and developing countries

Superb work, Nobel-Prize worthy
The insight given in this book is, without a doubt, beneficial not just to mankind, but also and especially developing countries. I highly recommend.

Essential Reading on the Subject
This book describes all the aspects involved in gettting a micro hydro plant running. It has the right blend of "The birds eye view" on the subject, very useful to people, new to the subject as well as "earth worm view": You can use this use this book as a guide to select the right kind of drive pulley for you plant.

More Cowboy Movie Posters (The Illustrated History of Movies Through Posters, Vol 6)
Published in Paperback by Bruce Hershenson (August, 1998)
Authors: Bruce Hershenson, Richard Allan, and Richard Allen
Average review score:

The Colorful West
More Cowboy Movie Posters is a fabulous art book and truly invaluable, offering the highest quality images from good and bad westerns. As someone who collects western posters, I have used this book as an important aid to purchasing posters illustrated within. Without such a quality reference I would have needed to peruse a stack of catalogs to find the same amount of images. For the non collector movie buff, the book is equally a delight and tremendous value at the low price.

Superb, Extraordinary Detail On Every Level!
This review can easily apply to any of the books in the Bruce Hershenson edited series of film poster history. Hershenson rightly treats film graphics not just as pop culture artifacts but true works of art. His books are filled with a curator's eye for superior choice and reproduction, each poster in striking color and with a clarity of printing that rivals most any coffee table art book. Somewhere between advertising and illustration, film posters, like book jackets and record covers, inhabit that imaginative and atmospheric zone where one art reflects another. It's not just the history of film or the history of film design, it's a history of twentieth century Saturday afternoons and Saturday nights. How often we would go into the dark theatre armed only with the ideas and ideals of the posters outside, and then return to them afterward, perhaps with nodding affirmation or smirking disillusionment, but still a vision of what could be. This series of books should be subtitiled: THE FINE ART OF ANTICIPATION,for no matter if expectation was filled or emptied by the films behind them, their posters kept on shining.

A beautiful treasure-trove of movie memories.
All the great heroes of Hollywood westerns are represented in a book that's a delight to flip through. It's packed with the colorful, dramatic, enticing art that made movie posters even more appealing than the movies, themselves.

Mucky Moose
Wonderful & entertaining for kids of all ages. I had great fun reading to kids grades K-4, using different voices for Mucky & the wolf. Kids laughed & laughed. Automatically initiates discussion time. It's my second favorite book, after Charlotte's Web.

A must for Grandparents for their grandchildren
A must for kids who love to laugh. Give it to your children or grandchildren and you will enjoy it every time you read it to them.

Laugh till you cry till you pee. This book was HILARIOUS!
With Mucky Moose, the never ending search for a good old bedtime story ended here. Mucky's strong character (and smell) are to big a match for the big bad wolf. Morale of the story " If you can't eat him, become a seeing eye wolf " Laugh till you cry till you pee, this book book was a winner for my daughter and me.

Mystery at Jacob's Well
Published in Hardcover by Eakin Publications (October, 2001)
Authors: Marcia Allen Bennett and Jason C. Eckhardt
Average review score:

Mystery at Jacob's Well is well worth your while
I am waiting for the sequel! I did not realize how many facts I was learning while I was being entertained by this wonderful story. I look forward to more books by Mrs. Bennett.

What a terrific book!
As a teacher, I highly recommend this book for not only the factual information, but for the "mystery" aspect as well. It will definitely hold a young reader's attention. I especially enjoyed the fact that the well is a real-life location and that Indian folklore played such a significant part in the story.

Mystery at Jacob's Well is a winner!
Marcia Bennett's "Mystery at Jacob's Well" is a great read for kids age 8 or up. As a writer and science teacher, I'm always delighted to find a good, wholesome children's book that incorporates an intelligent story line with accurate historical and science fact. This book reminded me of those great Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden books we used to read, but it has considerably more substance for today's more sophisticated youth audience. Although the book draws from local (Texas) folklore, it should be enjoyed by readers from Maine to California. I highly recommend Ms. Bennett's book, and hope that it is the first of a long series.

New York, New York: A History of the World's Most Exhilarating and Challenging City
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (January, 1991)
Author: Oliver E. Allen
Average review score:

Vibrant, dynamic history of the great city. A must.
Oliver E. Allen's "New York New York" is an outstanding account of the growth and development of New York City from the small Dutch settlement of the 1600's to the international powerhouse of the 1980's. All major influences, people, and incidents that played roles in the shaping of the metropolis are describe with compelling and cohesive clarity. Factual and scholarly research that reads like a page turner. A must for any historian, urban politician, or literate New Yorker. Should be a required text for New York Colleges or elite High Schools, as well as the private libraries of politically involved urbanites of any city. Even as a jaded New Yorker I give it Five stars.

Very interesting study of the Big Apple.
After finishing Allen's book, I found I knew little about the city I've lived in for 32 years. This book is chock full of interesting facts about the city's history from Dutch control in the 1600's, to British colonization in the 1700's, and independence through the 1800's and 1900's. The author skillfully brings to life many of the colorful characters, both good and bad, who have stirred the mixture that makes NY so exciting. Men like Stuyvesant, Boss Tweed, JP Morgan, Lindsay, and LaGuardia, are all given the attention they deserve for shaping the city of today. This a terrific overview and will push me to a more detailed study of particular aspects of this unique city.

Compelling history of the Big Apple.
First let me preface my review by stating that this is thefirst book I've read on New York, so I am by no means an expert on thecity's history. Therefore, I found this book to be a good introduction for the beginner(me), because it encompasses much of the overall development of the city while not getting bogged down in unneccesary details, which keeps the book moving fluidly throughout. The book covers over three hundred years of material, ranging from Dutch settlement in the 1600's through English colonization in the 1700's and up to the present day 1990's, and does so in a way that most people will find interesting. Now that I've read Allen's book I'm stirred to read more on the city's wonderful history, something I've been neglecting even though I've lived here for 32 years.

Picker McClickker
Published in Hardcover by Southern Pub Group (September, 1993)
Authors: Allen Jr. Johnson and Stephen Hanson
Average review score:

Hilarious! The Funniest Book I've ever read!
even though I am 12 years old my dad still reads me his story. we got it as a gift and saved it because it is so bad it is funny. All the children look as if they have premature aging syndrome, and the characters are such a stereotype of "hillbillies" that it's offensive, but not too offensive to laugh at. The illustrator believes that "if you have fun with anything you do, the rest will take care of itself." This book proves his theroy wrong. I reccomend not to buy this book unless it is as a joke gift.

An engaging, entertaining, and warm hearted story
In Picker Mcclikker, four-year-old Picker encounters Big Louis, a 300-pound gypsy and master grape picker. The event is a world champion grape-picking contest. Picker is the youngest child of a poor but happy sharecropper family from Evergreen, Alabama. And Picker has a very special ability when it comes to what he's named for! Stephen Hanson's wonderfully colorful artwork perfectly showcases Allen Johnson's engaging, entertaining, and warm hearted story of a little boy with a big talent! Picker Mcclikker is energetically highly recommended addition to family, school, and community library picturebook collections for young readers.

Endearing Picker
This is the original Picker McClikker Story set in rural Evergreen, Alabama where we find out how this endearing little boy became a world famous picker.

When I purchased this book in 1993, I was fortunate to get my copy signed by illustrator Stephen Hanson. Originally the illustrations drew me to the book. Little Picker McClikker looked just like my two-year old son who was also quick with his hands and into everything. However, the story along with the beautiful pictures has made this one of our family's favorites.

This story has all the home spun excitement of the yarns my grandfather used to tell - full of clean, rural humor and the heartfelt warmth of a loving, hardworking family. This sweet little boy, nicknamed "Picker" because of his remarkable picking speed, goes a long way from his depression-era, share cropping farm all the way to Paris, France to become a world champion grape picker.

You'll love this book if you are from the South and love those stories your grandparents used to tell. The illustrations beautifully convey an earthy, homey feeling.

Pier Angeli: A Fragile Life
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (29 October, 2002)
Author: Jane Allen
Average review score:

A great biography of a sad life
Information on Pier Angeli is hard to find; I'm so glad I found this book! Pier's story is wonderfully told - I simply could not put this book down. I highly recommend it!

Pier Angeli; A Fragile Life.
Here at long last is a first rate biography of Anna Maria Pierangeli.
Jane Allen has managed to capture here the whole of the Pier Angeli era perfectly, from a wealth of personal family interviews and worldwide media reports.
For the first time, the writer has delved into Pier's mind and given us all an illuminating scene of what made her so irresistable with her unique beauty. Many previously unpublished photographs are included and there are chapters devoted to her relationships with James Dean and Kirk Douglas.
Her sad and declining years are written in a sympathetic and moving style with great depth and sincerity that any Pier fan would appreciate.A comprehensive Filmography of all her films from 1949 to 1971 are covered, and a very detailed Notes section covers some 16 pages.
This is a very fine definitive volume, and Jane Allen should be congratulated for this labor of love.

You Can't Put This Book Down!
I was in my early teens when Pier Angeli was on top. I remember Vic Damone's television show (my mother always watched it). Plus I barely remember the custody battles between the couple in the late fifties. Since I am an ardent James Dean fan, I didn't care a lot for Pier because I thought she was a flighty thing with little substance. This book changed my mind. It is beautifully written and well-researched. The writer pulls you into the setting, leaving you with the sense that you are really there. The author is both a writer and a psychologist; her analysis is quite perceptive. She views the situations from all aspects and doesn't throttle the reader with her own opinion. Some biographies are manipulated to the writer's benefit. Such is not the case here. For anyone who has ever been an admirer of any of the people in Pier Angeli's short life, this book is a must!

Power Marketing for Consultants Review
Power Marketing for Consultants:142Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants, by Marjorie Brody, Allen D'Angelo, Bill Kerley, and Bernard Zick unveil the power marketing secrets that justify why top consultants are making four times as such money as average consultants and have more time to enjoy their own lives. The authors of Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants (Power Marketing for Consultants) are all highly successful consultants who enjoy what they do and are highly respected in the consulting arena. Brody, D'Angelo, et al. have taken thousands of working hours over the last twenty-five years and clearly stated their marketing and consulting philosophy in their book. The authors' research has shown that there is a large group of consultants on the lower end of the success curve and those who fall among the nation's most successful consultants. Successful consultants are storyteller, magicians, and highly successful in their area of expertise. The "magic" that successful consultants seem to perform is a result of well organized and highly tactical "power marketing." Power Marketing for Consultants is organized into three major marketing topic areas: Power Marketing Strategies, Power Marketing Tactics, and Power Marketing Maxims. Within the three topic areas each one of the authors highlighted their own marketing issues and practices. Just as the title implies there are 142 tips or suggestions in the book; they serve as their own chapters within the three major marketing themes. It is easy reading and is very direct, nothing is held back. When comparing Power Marketing for Consultants to Peter Block's book Flawless Consulting, Second Edition I believe Brody, D'Angelo, et al's work to be more organized and targeted towards a more professional audience. The target audience reached by Brody, D'Angelo, et. al. are young professionals or those who trying to gain further success and insight in their own consulting career. Robert B. Cialdini, author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, noted that, "Power Marketing for Consultants provides a rich source of valuable experience and insights for enhancing the consulting process." The authors of Power Marketing for Consultants have many of the same goals as Cialdini, they are result driven and have determined the only real challenge in life is getting people to comply with you. Getting compliance can be done several different ways, however, Brody, D'Angelo, et. al made several marketing suggestions to help consultants establish and maintain both valuable and beneficial relationships. In the "Power Marketing Strategies-Strengthening Your Foundation," portion of the book there are several helpful suggestions made. For example, writing down your goals, make a marketing log, keeping money in the bank, and obtaining better clients are just a few of the helpful suggestions given. "Power Marketing Tactics: Powering It Up," section made reference to joining professional and community organizations, hiring a public relations professional, getting into cyberspace, networking with non-competitive consultants, serving as a Master of Ceremonies, and writing articles for professional journals. Lastly, Brody, D'Angelo, et. al focuses on "Power Marketing Maxims: For Enduring Success" here they reinforce how important it is to be reliable and responsible, having a good sense humor, and understanding the Law of Cause and Effect. Brody, D'Angelo, Kerey, and Zick have taken their insider knowledge to what has made them successful and laid it out on the table; their work in this book clearly mirrors their success in each of their various areas of expertise. The information available in Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants, by Marjorie Brody, Allen D'Angelo, Bill Kerley, and Bernard Zick is practical, sustainable, and time tested. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in being respected among the nation's top consultants.
